JOA sends best wishes as athletics gets under way in Paris

Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) President Christopher Samuda has sent his best wishes to the Jamaican contingent who are now called into action as the athletics events get under way in Paris.

The majority of the Jamaica athletes will compete under the lights of the Stade de France for the upcoming week and a half as the athletics events run their course of the Paris Olympic Games.

Samuda reminded the athletes of the JOA’s theme for the Games, ‘Power in Paris’, as he encouraged the delegation in their quest for gold.

“As we begin our athletic campaign in the French capital, it remains ‘Power in Paris’, which is the theme of the Jamaica Olympic Association for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games,” he said. “History will be made for some, and for others, it will be an affirmation of what history has written and the present acknowledges.

“What is on the agenda is gold, and that must be the focus that drives citizens of the sprint capital,” Samuda said.

The athletics schedule starts today at 3:15 a.m. Jamaica time, with the women’s high jump qualification round. National champion Lamara Distin will be the sole competitor in the event and kick-starts Jamaica’s campaign.

Samuda expressed his confidence in the athlete’s ability to carry the iconic athletic legacy Jamaica has earned throughout Olympic history.

“It will be D-Day, and I have every hope that goals will be met and surpassed,” he said. “I have every confidence that our men and women will be the greatest versions of themselves and earn the admiration and pride of our country.”

Following the high jump, the next event on the schedule will be the women’s 100m heats where Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shashalee Forbes and Tia Clayton will get into action.

The first finals for Jamaica’s athletes could be tomorrow if they get past the qualification rounds.

The men’s shot put final, the women’s triple jump final, the mixed 4x400m final and the women’s 100m final are all set for tomorrow.
